Detailed Notes
Money was valued when Sumanji was growing up because it allowed his family to look after what was functional
Happiness is also related to the security that money brings. Many of us grow up thinking that to be happy is to have some level of financial security.
We don’t need to look after the functional from a survival perspective. Because of our privilege, we get to think about deeper things, and we get to ask more questions about life:
- What is happiness?
- What is my place in the world?
- What is my purpose?
Sumanji’s exploration brought him to Advaita Vedanta, or the science of happiness. Within a year of being exposed to Chinmaya Mission, he never looked back. He continues to be a student and shares the message of independent joy as often as possible
Content for this year – we will study the second half of the Hanuman Chalisa! We will start by reviewing the content from last year:
Question: What is the hallmark of a sincere seeker?
Answer: Humility & Selflessness
- Humility -> feels like less deservership
- Selflessness -> Being more giving, with time, effort, and resources
With Self Development, the path and the goal are the same. When we practice this – we stop looking at others and look in the mirror. Make this journey personal, otherwise nothing will change. I we don’t personalize what we are learning in satsang, then we don’t adapt to the challenges around us -> Leading to complaining, criticizing, crying (suffering) — the 3 C’s.
In Secular Science, knowledge is measured by information. In sacred science, knowledge is measured by transformation. We know that we are growing when we feel lighter! An expression of lightness is when we laugh more 🙂
From the Ramayana – we learn Humility
From the Bhagavatam – we learn Surrender.
The greatest act of our free will is to surrender it! There is no life lived, there is only life.
Sanatana Dharma means perpetual self-development. There are only 2 aspects — sadhana (the means) and moksha (the goal). When our goal is to be independent, to be joy – we will see all of life as opportunities to attain this goal.
Humility & Selflessness are means to purification – embracing discomfort, developing virtues, lessening likes and dislikes.
How can we do this? By associating!
As we associate -> so we think -> so we develop -> so we become.
Live by the 3 Ps in life (ascending order)
- People -> They come and go (ephemeral)
- Purpose -> To share Advaita Vedanta (generational)
- Presence -> Independent joy (eternal) (the highest aspiration)
3 Gunas (Ascending Order)
- Tamasik karma -> Lazy actions focused on the individual
- Rajasik karma -> Busy action focused on oneself and family
- Saatvik karma -> Peaceful and present actions focused on being selfless towards society and humanityÂ
Hold on to Sri Hanuman by learning through Him to reach Bhagvan Rama if we are willing to hold on. Holding on means showing up
Prioritize yourself, prioritize your happiness!
RAW for this week: Open your bag, wallet, notes app, and remove one item you rarely use. What belief about control or support was in that item for you?
