Chinmaya Mission Cleveland-Niagara Raises the Bar on Giving

Introduction
Pujya Swami Chinmayananda’s vision for Chinmaya Mission is “Maximum happiness for maximum people for maximum time.”
With this spirit, Chinmaya Mission Cleveland-Niagara shares Sanatana Dharma’s ancient wisdom in a modern context, helping interested individuals pursue spiritual development. In 2016, Chinmaya Cleveland-Niagara began virtual courses thrice weekly for adults to remove geographical and scheduling barriers. To further tailor the teachings and increase inclusivity, virtual classes for children, parents, young adults, women, and older adults became available.
In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought uncertainty and greater need for remote satsang. This uncertainty gave birth to Meaningful Mornings, a daily 15-minute satsang led by Shri Vivekji. In the initial lockdown period, Meaningful Mornings provided practical insights from Vedanta and helped seekers stay connected, even while at home. With its great popularity and efficacy, Meaningful Mornings grew into a platform for daily scriptural study, even after COVID. From October 2022 to June 2024, Shri Vivekji shared the philosophy and practical application of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita by systematically teaching all 700 verses, one verse daily.
Nine years since the inception of virtual classes, the Chinmaya Cleveland-Niagara community is serving seekers of varying ages, from all corners the world. Offerings include daily contemplation on Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, daily morning satsang, weekly evening courses, in-person retreats, yatras, and one-with-one connection with trained Guides. Of special note, this fall, for the 9th year, 100+ seekers from Chinmaya Cleveland-Niagara’s “Running from the Mind” community will be running a half marathon, as a mindfulness and inner tranquility practice.
Broadening the Culture of Giving
The Chinmaya Mission pledge shares, “Devotion to the people is devotion to the Supreme Self.” To make this pledge actionable, the Chinmaya Mission Cleveland-Niagara serves society by giving resources, time, and effort where it is needed most.
Starting in 2020, the Chinmaya Mission Cleveland-Niagara community recognized the need to broaden the practice of dana (charity). In addition to supporting Chinmaya Mission, seekers began to support non-profit organizations serving the pressing needs of society. In this first year of philanthropy, over $100,000 was donated to seven charities serving those in need including women, children, animals, and the food insecure. In 2021, over $150,000 was donated to another seven charities, including those supporting women’s safety and COVID-19 relief in India and other countries. From January 2022 to March 2025, over $850,000 has been donated to over 30 charities working across the globe to protect our air, water, earth, wildlife, mental health, safety, food security, women, and children. In March 2025, the community completed raising over $1 million dollars to non-religious charities, and the impact of these efforts are evident as shared by the charities with messages to the community.
| Messages to the Chinmaya Cleveland-Niagara Community “From all of us at Daya, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your incredible support. Your fundraising efforts mean so much to the survivors we serve—individuals and their children who are courageously rebuilding their lives after abuse. Because of your generosity, more South Asian families will find safety, healing, and the resources they need to move forward with hope. Your kindness and commitment to uplifting others truly make a difference, and we are deeply grateful to have you as part of this journey.” – Daya Team “Your community’s support has the power to plant 92,628 trees, which will support 185 people on the pathway out of poverty and hunger. Over the next twenty years, these trees will sequester 3,349 metric tonnes of CO2, planting a brighter future for our planet and us all.” – Alexa, Trees for the Future Thank you again for your work on this incredible fundraiser. As I mentioned before, this has been one of the most successful fundraisers I have ever seen since joining Water For People 3 years ago. – Daryl, Water for People “I thank you very sincerely for all the support you have provided for this important work to conserve these wonderful flagship species [tigers, elephants, and rhinos.” – Nilanga Jayasinghe, Asian Species Conservation, World Wildlife Fund “The entire Active Minds team wanted to send a quick THANK YOU for choosing to support Active Minds and our mission to support youth and young adult mental health. Your fundraising efforts have not gone unnoticed – raising thousands to support our cause which specifically include: Send Silence Packing (SSP), an award winning traveling exhibit showcasing stories of hope and loss, that is brought to communities and campuses across the country.” ~ Brett, Active Minds “You all have achieved something huge. You have supported solutions to protect rainforests at the local and international level. From funding indigenous patrollers so they can prevent deforestation to putting community leaders on the international stage to share critical knowledge on how to keep our rainforests standing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” ~ Ziv, Rainforest Foundation US |

Living the Teachings through Giving
With Vedanta as the foundation, Chinmaya Mission Cleveland-Niagara’s culture of giving provides the means to infuse philosophy into practice. The scriptures teach that there are 5 debts (rna) to repay: (1) nature’s forces (deva), (2) nature’s beings (bhuta), (3) society (samaj), (4) family (pitr), and (5) spiritual visionaries (rsi). The Chinmaya Mission Cleveland-Niagara community’s past and ongoing efforts are oriented around giving back to these rnas and fulfilling Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda’s vision.
